FAQs for international applicants

We understand that you will have a lot of questions during this time. To help, we have put together some FAQs below, which will hopefully answer some of them. Frequently Asked Questions

Due to the current disruption in testing we will temporarily accept some alternatives to the standard IELTS test for most courses. We will accept the IELTs Indicator or TOEFL Online if available in your country. Both of these tests can be taken from home on a desktop or laptop computer.

We are working closely with Governments and exam providers to agree a solution. We will be in contact as soon as we can to provide an update.

It may be possible to defer, but we will need to review individual requests at the time that they are made. Our decision will depend on the University’s policy and latest Government guidance. Please be aware that deferral by a semester is not possible on all courses, as some only have one start date a year.

There is an extension on the guarantee from the end of July to the end of August. During the COVID period your contract terms will be adjusted to provide maximum flexibility. We will keep you updated with any changes.

We are currently looking at plans to commence term on time in September and are exploring a range of models for what this might look like, also taking on board the evolving government advice. We will be in touch as soon as we are in a position to do so. We recommend that you keep to the terms of your offer, however, should you have specific issues please do contact our admissions team to further discuss.

As of 8 June, the UK government is asking all arrivals to the UK to self-isolate for 14 days on arrival. You can find more details here. This policy is being reviewed every three weeks, so it is not known if the requirement will still be in place in September, or whether it will apply to arrivals from all countries.  However please be assured that the University of Derby will support students through this time if any form of quarantine is in place when you arrive in the UK, and we are reviewing various accommodation options should the policy remain in place.
