Global Challenges Research Theme Weeks

Throughout the year, we host Research Theme Weeks that feature events, conferences collaborations and exhibitions. These weeks focus on our globally impactful research. They also show how we continue to embed the practice of a research-led curriculum and research collaboration across our institution. This means we enable as many people as possible to become involved with research at Derby.

Key goals

The United Nations has identified 17 sustainable development goals which tackle international challenges such as global poverty, inequality and sustainability. The UK government has initiated the Global Challenges Research Fund. Led by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the fund supports research into these challenges and the development of solutions to combat them.

The fund aims to:

We are committed to playing a key role in the conversation around the sustainable development goals. We provide impactful research and constructive proposals to tackle the challenges faced by the international community in the 21st century. To this end, we will be presenting our research and stimulating discussion on many of the goals during three Global Challenges Research Theme Weeks.

At the heart of each research week will be a headline lecture presented by a member of our research community. They will explore a fundamental forward-looking question underlying the theme of the research week, based on their own research.
