Team Leader Level 3

A Team Leader is a first-line management role with operational and project responsibilities, or responsibility for managing a team to deliver a clearly defined outcome. They provide direction, instructions and guidance to ensure the achievement of set goals. Working in the private, public or third sector, and in organisations of all sizes, specific responsibilities will vary, but the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed will be the same whatever the role.

Key responsibilities are likely to include supporting, managing and developing team members, managing projects, planning and monitoring workloads and resources, delivering operational plans, resolving problems, and building relationships internally and externally.

This apprenticeship will help you develop a wide range of knowledge, skills, and behaviours, including:

Knowledge

• Understand different leadership styles and the benefits of coaching to support people and improve performance.
• Understand approaches to customer and stakeholder relationship management, including emotional intelligence and managing conflict.
• Understand how organisational strategy is developed.
• Understand organisational governance and compliance, and how to deliver value for money.
• Know how to be self-aware and understand unconscious bias and inclusivity.
• Understand time management techniques and tools, and how to prioritise activities and approaches to planning.
• Understand problem-solving and decision-making techniques, and how to analyse data to support decision-making.

Skills

• Able to communicate organisational strategy and team purpose, and adapt style to suit the audience.
• Build trust with and across the team using effective negotiation and influencing skills, and manage any conflicts.
• Communicate effectively (verbal, written, digital), chair meetings and present to team and management. Use active listening and provide constructive feedback.
• Organise, manage resources and risk, and monitor progress to deliver against the project plan.
• Use relevant project management tools and take corrective action to ensure successful project delivery.
• Apply organisational governance and compliance requirements to ensure effective budget controls.
• Reflect on own performance, seek feedback, understand why things happen and make timely changes to apply learning from feedback received.
• Use effective problem-solving techniques to make decisions relating to information from the team and others, and escalate issues when required.

A blend of on-the-job and academic learning

Most learning is on-the-job, guided by your employer and Instructor-Mentor. You will attend Buxton Campus every 6-8 weeks and receive regular workplace visits from your Instructor-Mentor for observations, professional discussions, and progress reviews.

How you are assessed

The Apprenticeship Assessment is the final stage of every apprenticeship. It checks overall competence, not just individual tasks, and gives apprentices the chance to demonstrate the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs) they have developed. For this apprenticeship, there are two elements: a presentation with questions & Answers and a professional discussion underpinned by the portfolio of evidence, which will be complied throughout the apprenticeship.

• Earn a recognised qualification
  You’ll achieve a Level 3 apprenticeship standard, giving your CV weight and helping you stand out for future roles.

  You’ll be trusted with real tasks like resource management, solving problems, planning workloads, and setting goals, which boosts both your confidence and value to an employer. 

• Good career progression options
  Completing this opens doors to higher roles in management or supervision. It’s a stepping stone if you want to advance into middle-management, specialised leadership positions or Higher-level qualifications such as the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship. 

• Applicants will need a good standard of Maths & English, ideally GCSE 4 or above (grade C if taken prior to 2017).
• You must have the right to work in the UK and have lived in the UK for at least the past three years.
• As this is an apprenticeship, you will also require suitable employment to undertake the programme, including responsibility for a team of people of any size in the workplace.

Apprenticeships are funded by either the employer or the government; apprentices do not pay for their training.
