Learning and Skills Assessor Level 3

The role of the learning and skills assessor can be found in all sectors where learning, training and development are required. For example, but not limited to:

• healthcare
• military
• manufacturing
• production
• business and professional
• education
• leisure
• construction
• creative and technology.

A learning and skills assessor will be responsible for ensuring they are occupationally competent in the sector they are assessing in. Ordinarily, they would have been working in their sector for a number of years.

The broad purpose of the role is to assess candidates against agreed standards of competence using a range of assessment methods.

Throughout your apprenticeship you will gather evidence against the knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSB’s) as set out in the standard to build your portfolio. Your learning is built around key Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours (KSBs) defined in the apprenticeship standard, including:

Knowledge

• How to plan inclusive assessment
• Types and methods of assessment
• Standardisation, moderation and quality assurance procedures relevant to the assessment
• Organisational and legal requirements for recording, storing and sharing personal information

Skills

• Communicate with learner and relevant stakeholders to support assessment practice
• Provide constructive feedback to support the learner to progress
• Facilitate access to relevant, current information advice and guidance
• Apply holistic assessment in practice to support wider skills development
• Identify and implement professional development opportunities to maintain occupational competency

Behaviours

• Operate at all times to ethical and legal standards
• Take personal responsibility for sustainable outcomes
• Demonstrate and encourage mutual respect
• Be resilient and adaptable with dealing with challenge and change

The apprenticeship is taught through a blend of:

• on-campus activity days
• online sessions
• self-led set work
• workplace observations
• one-to-ones with your Instructor-Mentor.

How you are assessed

• Portfolio of evidence that demonstrates the knowledge, skills and behaviours gained
• Professional discussion
• Workplace observation with questions

You will:

• Have GCSE Maths and English grade 4 or above or an equivalent qualification.
• Have experience and be professionally competent in the sector they work in.
• Need to be in a position to have a candidate to assess.
• Need to complete a Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) as part of your employment. You will be supported to complete this if needed.
• Have the right to work in the UK and have been a resident in the UK for the prior 3 years.

Apprenticeships are funded by either the employer or the government; apprentices do not pay for their training.
