Food and Beverage Team Member Level 2

A Food and Beverage Team Member may work in a range of establishments, such as restaurants, bars, cafés, counter service outlets, licensed premises, and coffee shops. The role is varied, and although team members often specialise in roles such as bar person, waiter or waitress, or food and beverage assistant, they should be ready to support colleagues across the business. Communicating efficiently and effectively, and creating a positive and comfortable environment for customers, are key to this role.

Learning will be built around the knowledge, skills, and behaviours (KSBs) set out in the apprenticeship standard. Examples include:

Knowledge

• Recognise a range of food and beverages, their price, and any pairings, deals, or offers.
• Understand health and safety legislation, regulations, guidelines, and procedures relevant to your role.
• Know the processes for handling transactions and payments securely.
• Understand methods to sustainably reduce waste of resources, in line with business standards.
• Know the different customer types and how their specific needs and customer journeys differ.
• Understand the different types of organisations that make up the wider hospitality industry.

Skills

• Tailor communication techniques to meet customer needs and build rapport.
• Work as part of a team to ensure that products and services are delivered on time and in line with business needs.
• Serve food and beverages to business standards.
• Manage your own time and workload, prioritising tasks effectively.
• Use feedback to improve your own performance.
• Check that customers are satisfied with products and services through questioning, and act on feedback in line with business procedures.

Behaviours

• Take responsibility for your own health, wellbeing, and professional development, seeking support when appropriate.
• Show commercial awareness.
• Be customer-focused.
• Be diligent in safe and hygienic working practices.

A blend of on-the-job and academic learning

Most learning is on-the-job, guided by your employer and Instructor-Mentor. You will attend Buxton Campus one day per week and receive regular workplace visits from your Instructor-Mentor for observations, professional discussions, and progress reviews.

How you are assessed

The apprenticeship assessment is the final stage of an apprenticeship. This is an impartial assessment, carried out by an independent assessor and will assess your development of the skills, knowledge and behaviours outlined in the apprenticeship standard.

This apprenticeship has 2 assessment methods, both of which must be passed.

• Assessment method 1 – observation with questions.
• Assessment method 2 – interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.

• Learn on the Job
  You’ll get real hands-on experience working in restaurants, cafés, bars, and other hospitality settings. This means you’ll pick up practical skills while earning a wage.

• Show What You Can Do
  At the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll take an assessment that lets you demonstrate your knowledge, skills, and behaviours. Passing it proves you meet professional standards.

• Boost Your Career
  Completing this apprenticeship gives you a nationally recognised qualification. It makes you more employable and opens doors to progress in the hospitality industry.

• Work with Supportive Employers
  Your employer will help you learn and grow, giving you training tailored to their business. You’ll become part of a skilled team and gain experience that employers value.

• A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above (or equivalent), including Maths and English.
  • If you have not achieved these qualifications, it may be possible to complete functional skills as part of your apprenticeship, depending on personal circumstances.
• You must have the right to work in the UK and have lived in the UK for at least the past three years.
• As this is an apprenticeship, you will also require suitable employment to undertake the programme.

Apprenticeships are funded by either the employer or the government; apprentices do not pay for their training.
