Ocean Guard

Ocean Guard is a Derby based university spin-out marine biotechnology company whose mission is to develop innovative, science-based solutions to protect, restore and enhance the world’s coral reefs and marine ecosystems.

Why engage with Derby Innovation Accelerator?

Ocean Guard approached Derby Innovation Accelerator for innovation voucher support to access specialist expertise and facilities that would help it undertake specific research and development activity. This would otherwise have been difficult to access due to resource constraints.

The project has enabled the company to successfully progress the development of both a biodegradable biomaterial and a sea urchin housing concept. Through the collaboration, the company was able to refine designs, evaluate manufacturing approaches, and gain important technical insights that will support future product development.

CEO, Mackenzie Sargeant commented:

“The academic team provided valuable technical knowledge, practical guidance, and access to specialist facilities. The support helped us move from concept-stage ideas towards tangible designs and prototypes while improving our understanding of material performance, manufacturability, and future development requirements.”
