College of Policing provides accreditation to the University of Derby

17 December 2015

The University of Derby’s Policing course has recently received accreditation by the professional body for policing, which could reduce the amount of training students need when they apply for a job at their chosen police force.

The Certificate in Knowledge of Policing is a pre entry requirement for a number of police forces and was established around six years ago by the College of Policing.

There are around 20 police forces (out of the 43 total forces in the UK) that accept applicants with a Certificate in Knowledge of Policing.

Mark Flint-Freel, Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Derby, said: “The approved provider status achieved by the University is recognition by the College of Policing that we have achieved all the approval criteria, and that we can deliver a nationally recognised product to our students.

“This ensures that once they have completed the accreditation, students can apply to a police service with the confidence that their qualification is nationally recognised as a pre-join approval pathway. I am very proud that this approval demonstrates the University’s continual commitment to deliver the best in policing training.”

Second-year Policing student, Melissa Twyford, said: “The Certificate in Knowledge of Policing, will enable me to earn an extra qualification and enhance my CV.

“It’s a great chance to develop our investigative, interviewing and critical thinking skills.

“It will be exciting to face the challenge and complete the Certificate in Knowledge of Policing which is different to all the other aspects of the course.”
