26 November 2015

The University of Derby’s Law School is set to host its second British Society of Criminology (BSC) Midlands Regional Network seminar, which provides a platform for experts in the criminal justice sector to discuss their research and engage in a variety of talks about crime, criminal justice, criminalisation and social exclusion.

The seminar, titled: ‘The challenges for police leadership – the past, the present and the future’, will take place on Thursday, December 3 between 5-7pm at the new Derby Law School, One Friar Gate Square which opened in September for law and criminology students.

Industry experts will come together to explore the challenges for policing leaders in providing a service that best meets the needs of a modern democracy and one that it can afford.

Speakers will include Dr Mark Kilgallon, Senior Fellow from the International Policing & Justice Institute at the University of Derby, Deputy Chief Constable Steve Allen, QPM at Police Scotland and, Chief Constable Michael Barton, QPM at Durham Constabulary.

Dr Philip Hodgson, Head of the Department of Law and Criminology at the University of Derby and Vice Chair of the Midlands BSC, said: “Hosting the BSC Midlands Regional Network seminar and attracting such high profile speakers demonstrates that the University is at the forefront of policing education”.

“The seminar will be the first major event held at our new premises at One Friar Gate Square and will be of interest to anyone who wants to hear more around police leadership in times of austerity. We have an excellent line up and are delighted to have been able to attract three speakers who are highly influential figures in the field.”
