Business students pitch ideas to industry professionals

Hundreds of business students gathered at QUAD in Derby to pitch their ideas to business leaders in the city at a Dragons’ Den style event.

As part of the annual Derby Business School (DBS) Induction Conference, on Friday 16 September, students were tasked with creating a short presentation about how they could attract people to live and work in Derby.

They then pitched their ideas to peers from second and third-year business courses and selected groups were chosen to present to a panel of business leaders from the city, including:

Sam Rush, Chief Executive of Derby County Football Club, also spoke at the event.

The winning team consisted of Ashfaq Rahman, Liam Booth, Regan Swift and Jordan Watkins.

Accounting and Finance student Ashfaq said: “This experience has enabled me to develop my confidence. It is a great University for setting us up for the real world. We had a great time and we are really happy about winning!”

Business Studies student Liam said: “I have never publicly spoken before at QUAD it was my first time in front of around 200 people. I was quite nervous to begin with, but I got better towards the end. It has definitely helped my confidence and got me out of my comfort zone.”

Students also had the opportunity to meet and network with local entrepreneurs and academic staff from DBS to understand what employers want from graduates, look to the future and explore career aspirations and, focus on making the most out of university.

The University will be hosting an event for postgraduate students on 5 October 2016, which will include a presentation from Martin Baxter, Chief Policy Advisor, Institute of Environmental Management Assessment (IEMA), titled ‘Sustainability and the Global’.
