About

I am a Professor of Contemporary Art and Co-Lead for the Creative and Cultural Industries Academic Theme. I also Co-Lead the Creative and Cultural Industries Research Centre, and am the UoA34 REF Deputy Lead, amongst other university duties. I am an artistic researcher working on interspecies and interdisciplinary projects disseminated in multi-modal forms.

For REF 2029 I am on the national assessment Sub-Panel for UoA32; from 2023 I have been Trustee of the Board of Directors of the Live Art Development Agency and a member of the UKRI Talent Peer Review College; from 2018-2026 I served the maximum election term as an Executive Board member of the Society for Artistic Research (SAR) including elected Vice President between 2024-2026; from 2020 a selected member of the CHEAD Research Alliance Strategy Group; an appointed Collaborations Champion for the National Centre for Academic and Cultural Exchange (NCACE) since 2021; and between 2017-2024 I completed tenure as Steering Group member of Contemporary Visual Arts Network East Midlands (CVAN EM), serving as Chair from 2019-2022.

I gained a PhD in Fine Art practice and theory from Middlesex University and am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I regularly examine the work of external PhD candidates, and examine Fine Art UG and PGT programmes.

I became a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Art, Caine College of the Arts, Utah State University, in 2021, and Visiting Professor at University of Lapland in 2024. From 2024 I represent the UK on the Management Committee for the multi-country COST Action, Artistic Intelligence - Responsiveness, accessibility, responsibility, equity (ARTinRARE), and additionally a member of its Collective Intelligences Working Group. I am external assessor for UoA32 REF 2029 at Bath Spa University.

Research interests

I work as an artist and artistic researcher within interdisciplinary, interspecies, and intergenerational projects. My research focuses on documentation as an act of ephemeral art process, and with animality and empathy (as acted and/or intuitively behaved) in human-animal companion-species relationships. These subjects are analysed through live art, video, sculpture and published texts. The research with companion species is specifically with dogs primarily, plus horses and cats, and the critical and social contexts in which they have relevance.
