About

Prior to joining the University of Derby in 2020, I taught at several universities, including Essex, Leicester, and Hull. Currently, I serve as the EU Chairperson for Arbitrations and Trade-and-Sustainable-Development Expert Panel Proceedings at the European Commission and an international arbitrator for the China Guangzhou Arbitration Commission.

My diverse career includes roles at international organisations such as UNEP and the Office of Legal Affairs at the UNHQ. I am also an associate member of WhistleblowersUK, assisting the All-Party Parliamentary Group in drafting and promoting the Whistleblowing Bill in the UK. At the influential Legatum Institute in London, I served as an expert group member, contributing to the compilation of the Global Prosperity Index. This index measures prosperity in 167 countries, representing 99.4% of the world’s population, alongside eminent fellow experts, including former central bank chiefs and economists. Additionally, I received the 'Central Asian Legal Research Fellowship' from Tashkent State University of Law, Uzbekistan, in 2022-23.

I have a proven and robust track record of successfully securing funding for various research endeavours. For instance, I was awarded a grant from the British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship in 2019-2020 for the project 'Stock Connect: A New Model of Financial Market Integration.' In 2017, I received funding from the HEFCE Newton Funds to organise a conference on 'Ethics and Challenges in Chinese Financial Markets' and participated in the Erasmus+ mobility programme at the University of Macau. A City Venture Research Grant in 2016 supported my research on the growth stories of Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Additionally, funding from the British Academy/Leverhulme Trust in 2013-15 supported the project 'A Tale of Three Cities - Unravelling the Common Law Advantage'. During my PhD research, I also received support from the Central Research Fund, University of London; Universities’ China Committee in London; SOAS Additional Fieldwork Award, and the AHRC Skills Fund.

In 2015, I was appointed to the Peer Review College (PRC) of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). I also serve as a peer reviewer for the Economic Social Research Council (ESRC), the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF), the Qatar National Research Fund, and the Strategic Public Policy Research Funding Scheme administered by the Hong Kong Government. I have reviewed for various journals and publishers, including the American Journal of Comparative Law, the Journal of Corporate Law Studies, Journal of Chinese Economic and Business Studies, and Journal of International Trade Law and Policy. In 2012, I was honoured with the Outstanding Reviewer award at the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence.

International experience

I am experienced in end-user and public/policy engagement. I am currently an EU Chairperson for Arbitrations and Trade-and-Sustainable-Development Expert Panel Proceedings at the European Commission and an arbitrator of the China Guangzhou Arbitration Commission. I am also a Central Asian Legal Research Fellow, at Tashkent State University of Law, Uzbekistan, and acted as an expert group member of an influential think-tank - the Legatum Institute in London on the Global Index of Economic Openness in 2019. I worked closely with international organisations such as the UNEP and the UNHQ with respect to legal, environmental, social and governance issues. Besides, I was often invited to give lectures and provide training to the delegations of judges and financial officers. I visited the Shanghai Stock Exchange and the Shenzhen Stock Exchanges in 2019, and Macau University in 2017.
