I am a Senior Lecturer in Education and SEND, Programme Leader for the online BA (Hons) Education Studies programme, Programme Collaborative Lead and a Civic Champion. I teach across undergraduate Education Studies programmes and also contribute to postgraduate teaching.

Teaching responsibilities

I teach predominantly across the undergraduate Education Studies programme, leading its educational philosophy strand and contributing to teaching in curriculum, behaviour, the arts and contemporary issues in education. I also contribute to postgraduate teaching.

Professional interests

My professional interests centre on leadership, professional judgement and decision-making, particularly how people read complex situations, determine an appropriate response and explain the reasoning behind their decisions. I am also interested in educational philosophy, curriculum and pedagogy, Alternative Provision, educational exclusion, professional identity and the work of professionals supporting excluded young people. These interests inform my teaching, research, curriculum development and consultancy across educational and changing workplace contexts.

Experience in industry

I have worked in education since qualifying as a lecturer in 2006, with extensive experience supporting young people who are vulnerable to exclusion. This has included looked-after children, young offenders, young people not in education, employment or training, and learners with additional needs. I have worked across further education, secondary education, youth services, Alternative Provision and higher education.

I have designed, led and taught a range of programmes, including an alternative Key Stage 4 curriculum for young people at high risk of exclusion and a programme for 16–18-year-olds entering education without formal qualifications. My school-based work included developing targeted provision for young people experiencing exclusion, peer difficulties and other challenges affecting their participation. I also spent three years as a Youth Worker in Charge, specialising in detached youth work and managing targeted youth provision for vulnerable young people aged 11–19.

My experience now informs my teaching, doctoral research and consultancy in leadership, professional judgement and decision-making. I have also facilitated postgraduate learning in Emotional Education and contributed to educational governance, including serving as a trustee at Parkside High and previously as Vice Chair of Kingsmead School.
