Event Management students bring The Union Awards to life

A group of second year Event Management students recently delivered The Union Awards at the University of Derby, in collaboration with the Union of Students. The event celebrated the successes and achievements of students across the University and Union Communities.

Three Event Management students were involved in all aspects of the event, from designing the ‘springtime soiree’ secret garden theme, to working with a client, negotiating with venue and entertainment, stakeholder management, sourcing sponsorship, developing marketing materials, arranging the itinerary, managing the event finances and delivering a wonderful event for 150 guests.

The students also demonstrated the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, by working closely with the University of Derby Sound, Light, and Live Event Engineering students. This experience provided a valuable insight to the different roles and requirements of teams needed to deliver a successful event.

The event was delivered as part of the student’s assessed Sustainable Event Operations module, where students gain both academic and practical experiences by delivering a live event. Opportunities like these provide our students with invaluable practical experiences and allow them to apply their theory to practice; ensuring that the next generation of event professionals are well-equipped to address the challenges and opportunities of industry.

"The process of working on the Union Awards has taught me a lot about what it takes to design, plan and execute a successful event. As part of the Prestige Planners team, I was responsible for turning the initial idea into a feasible event concept that celebrated student achievement whilst also maintaining a fun atmosphere, allowing students to relax. One of the key skills I have developed through working on this event is the ability to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders, from liaising with the venue to developing ideas with the Union of Students. It was a great opportunity that has given me more confidence in the practical side of event planning."

"As part of this module, we developed the concept for an awards event designed to engage attendees while creating a fun and memorable environment for students.

When the opportunity to collaborate with the Union of Students was presented to us, our concept quickly evolved into a much larger-scale event than we had originally envisioned. This experience gave me the chance to demonstrate and develop my event management skills. From pitching our initial ideas and concepts, to communicating and collaborating with the Union to ensure their vision and expectations for the awards event were successfully brought to life.

From sourcing sponsorships and liaising with the venue, to working with an industry mentor who guided us throughout the design and decoration process, this experience has truly enhanced my skills and strengthened my confidence."

Being given the opportunity to plan and deliver the Union Awards was such a valuable experience. I got to be a part of the event right from the planning stages through to running the event on the day. Throughout this experience, I have learned that effective communication is key to ensuring that everyone involved is kept informed and satisfied.
