Ready to Teach video transcript

[This video is filmed at a primary school and we move around school environments for four interviews - beginning with Darcy and Sophia, year 4 pupils at Mosley Academy.]

Sophia: Sometimes I feel that it might be quite hard being a like, teacher, but like, how do they know these things?

[Next, we are with Sarah Rowe, Mosley Academy Headteacher and University of Derby alumni. During this clip, we see Mr Deakin, a final year Derby student, in his classroom, helping his year 4 class.] 

Sarah: We love having Derby students on placement. They bring so much to our school: they bring that fresh energy, lots of new ideas. They're really committed and enthusiastic. They also work really well with our class teachers who are mentors here. So it brings some really good professional development for our teachers, however long they've been teaching - to have a student makes teachers reflect on their own practice. 

[Third, we join Daniella Luce, Mosley Academy Teacher and University of Derby alumni.]

Daniella: I enjoy having students from the universities. They also bring new things into the classroom. A lot of it actually this year was adaptive teaching and that was something I wanted to work on as well, because I've got a lot of SEND students. It was good to know that what she was learning at university are things that we were embedding in the classroom. So sort of backs up the research side with your practice.

[We return to Sarah, and during this we see Mr Deakin's stationary holder, followed by him holding his arm up for attention at the front of the classroom, a wider shot of the class, then a demonstration of combining little sticks and blu tac to form a cube. We finally see him playing a ball game in the playground with a pupil.]

Sarah: We've been really lucky to have Mr Deakin, a student from Derby University, on his final placement this year. And he's currently working now as a teacher here on a maternity leave cover in the class that he was working with this year. He's shown a real determination to succeed, a real strong work ethic, the ability to ask questions, to listen, to listen to feedback, to respond to that feedback, to check in. He clearly loves working with children and actually one of my first memories, I looked out the office window at playtime and he was out with the children and he was playing a game with them and I just thought, he's got it. Yeah, you'll go far, Mr. Deakin. And he he's just part of Mosley.

[We join Archie Deakin, Teacher Training student. During this we see him talking to his students, as they construct stick pyramids.]

Archie: After the three years I'd done at Derby, I was very prepared for my teaching. I knew what to expect as I walked through the doors as a class teacher and I think I know now that in my heart I'm ready for this. It's what I want. It's what I've wanted for a long time and I've worked for it for a very long time. But now I'm feeling prepared and I know I'm ready for that next step. And I'm teaching children every day and making an impact on their future.

[We're back with Darcy and Sophia.]

Sophia: He's very funny. 

Darcy: He's very kind and he's always making sure people are doing like the right thing, explains things very well.

Sophia: Yeah. 

[We cut back to Daniella, and see Darcy and Sophia in the class, working on making shapes with sticks.]

Daniella: Now, when I have a student myself, it helps me be more of a reflective practitioner to be honest, because I watch them and I think what would I do differently? And I think that through that support at university, that's helped me be a positive role model when I'm a mentor. 

[We cut back to Sarah, and see pupils enjoying their break time in the playground, stepping across toadstools, a group playing basketball, and two others watching the chicken coop.]

Sarah: Of our current staff team, we've got eight, eight teachers including myself - and we've got four of them that are former Derby University students. So that's that's quite a high proportion actually of Derby students that work at Mosley. So you must be doing something right. 

[We cut back to Archie, seeing him helping others in the class.]

Archie: We had lots of knowledge before we came on placement and then when we came onto placement we could apply all of that directly into our placement schools. My confidence has definitely improved massively. I'm definitely a lot more confident as a practitioner. 

[We cut back to Darcy and Sophia again.]

Sophia: And we love how the teachers are really kind.

Darcy: They explain things like the best they can and they're always trying to help everyone.

Sophia: Yeah, Mr. Deakin does a good thing where if someone shouts out, he says, "I can't hear anything." And so then they just go... 

[We cut back to Sarah again.]

Sarah: We really want them to be a part of Mosley when they're here, and hopefully leave us with a, a bigger passion to continue to be a teacher and and get a job either at our school or another. They are ready. They are ready to be teachers and it's, that's really, really special to see.
