Primary Education students on studying at Derby video transcript

I heard about Derby in a bit of a roundabout way because I left my application quite late. So I used UCAS to sort of find universities. So I came to the Open Day here and sat down with the staff and I could very much see myself as a student enrolled here.
I went to lots of universities, but coming here on the Open Days, it made me feel like you know a sense of belonging if that makes sense. You know the facilities here are really really good. So it was definitely a top choice for me because of that. And you know, when you're coming here and you're speaking to the teaching staff, they're really positive. They're really eager. They want to get to know you on like a more of a personal level and a professional level. And I think for me that spoke absolute volumes and it made me feel really, really comfortable here.
I'd definitely say my favourite part of the course is placement. It's where you get to use that university learning and put it into practice and seeing and building connections with the children and how you can help their learning is so rewarding. So far I've been in EYFS and year 3, but throughout your degree you'll experience all key stages to really prepare you.
It's what we want to do as primary school teachers. We want to go into schools and we want to teach. So I think it really gives you that hands-on experience of the job that you're actually going to do and it gives you that bit of a almost reality check of this is actually what I'm going to be doing and I can now see myself doing this. So I've had the privilege of working with year 3 and year 5. So like year 3 you get to see how you can make learning just interesting and how do you take it up a notch when you get into year 5 and how do you sort of - okay, I need to get them ready for SATs but how do I also still make this learning fun and how do I still get them involved?
It means you're able to go into the different environments, you're able to learn things here at uni and then go and apply it in a practical sense. So you're getting the best of both worlds and I think that's really helped with my development as well. So the skills that you'll learn here at Derby are very very important because it will actually what you learn here you can take into that professional environment and you can take it into any environment you're going into. A lot of the skills that you learn here are quite transferable as well. So if you was to work another job, it helps.
I think for me, the course and everything that we learn in the modules is very important for like life after when we do apply for jobs because like looking at the modules you learn about theories behaviour. I think that's a very key one when you're looking at children because you can sort of understand their home life. I think every module plays a role in how and what you do as a role as a teacher.
All the modules really look and zoom into the current education system and support you in the future and what you're going to be working in. I'm hoping to complete my degree and when I graduate, go through my two ECT years and then hopefully give back to the local community, become a mentor, and become a subject lead.
For me, my future role is just to do my ECT years and then use the degree to travel because I know teaching is very in demand all over the world. It gives me a chance to do what I love, but also see the world and just get more experiences of just different cultures.
After a couple of years, I'd like to then become a subject lead or something along those lines before making that step into SLT and then hopefully ending up as a headteacher or an executive head teacher somewhere.
