Beginning her journey

When starting the apprenticeship journey, Abbie was driven by a clear goal.

The apprenticeship offered the ideal balance between academic learning and real industry experience. It enabled her to continue developing in her role while building a strong educational foundation, equipping her with the knowledge and skills needed to grow within a highly technical sector.

For Abbie, the opportunity to combine practical experience with structured learning made the apprenticeship a natural next step in her career journey.

Learning through experience

Since starting the apprenticeship, Abbie’s journey has been both professionally rewarding and personally transformative. The apprenticeship exposed her to a wide range of industry topics, including mineral product applications, technical standards and best practices, enabling Abbie to confidently contribute to projects and day to day operations.

“Everything I learned could be applied directly in my role, which made the experience incredibly valuable.”

The apprenticeship also broadened her perspective of the industry as a whole, helping her appreciate how different roles and departments work together to maintain high standards across operations.

Developing valuable skills

Alongside technical knowledge, the apprenticeship enabled Abbie to develop a wide range of professional skills that continue to support her careers. Through her studies, she strengthened her problem-solving abilities, writing skills and understanding of industry-specific terminology.

The apprenticeship also deepened her awareness of the importance of safety, environmental responsibility and operational standards within the mineral products industry. These skills now play an important role in her position as an R&D Senior Technician, where she supports operational quality, contributes to technical projects and helps guide technicians to achieve their objectives.

Another key part of Abbie’s success during the apprenticeship was the strong support network she experiences throughout the programme.

The lecturers were approachable, down-to-earth and always willing to help. They created an inclusive environment where I felt respected and comfortable asking questions and chatting with them on breaks; my apprentice lead David Hindmarsh also played a key role in guiding me throughout the process.

Overcoming challenges

Balancing a full-time role with the academic demands of an apprenticeship required strong organisations and determination. Managing coursework, professional responsibilities and deadlines sometimes presented challenged, particularly during periods of intensive study.

“As someone with dyslexia, some tasks required extra time and focus but the support from the university was exceptional and helped make those challenges manageable. I also planned a wedding and got married during my apprenticeship which added to the pressure – but it showed me that a healthy work-life balance is still achievable with good organisation and support!”

Achieving success

One of the most rewarding aspects of the apprenticeship for Abbie was the opportunity to gain multiple qualifications while continuing to develop her career. Throughout the apprenticeship, she successfully completed the Higher Apprenticeship, an NVQ qualification and a Level 4 SHE (Safety, Health and Environment) qualification.

Achieving these qualifications whilst working full time required significant commitment, making the final outcomes even more rewarding. Completing the apprenticeships with a Distinction marked a proud milestone in her journey and reflected the dedication she invested in her studies.

The apprenticeship also provided opportunities to connect with other professionals within the industry, allowing Abbie to build valuable networks with peers who share similar career ambitions.

Advice to future apprentices

Reflecting on her experience, Abbie encourages anyone considering an apprenticeship to embrace the opportunity. While balancing work and study can sometimes feel demanding, the long-term benefits make the journey worthwhile.

Abbie believes that being curious, organisation and willing to ask questions are some of the most important qualities for anyone starting an apprenticeship.

Go for it. The workload can be challenging, but the support is there and the qualifications you gain are incredibly worthwhile. Most importantly, share your ideas and perspectives openly; they help drive continuous improvement across the industry and encourage others to see things from different viewpoints.
