Course description

The Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) is a programme suitable for vocationally qualified professionals seeking to teach students in the Post 14 FES sector, as is the Learning and Skills Teacher Apprenticeship which has the Cert Ed as an embedded qualification.

The Cert Ed programme is suitable for both pre-service trainees preparing to become professional teachers and in-service trainees already working in the sector. The apprenticeship is only suitable for in-service trainees already working in the sector.

The programmes develop trainees’ teaching skills through reflective practice, based on the acquisition of a portfolio of teaching techniques and an engagement with theory that informs educational practice. Trainees develop as dual professionals, qualified and experienced in both their subject area and in the application of relevant pedagogies.

Teaching experience coupled with academic rigour is aligned with Occupational Standards, resulting in a qualification with recognised national standing. Trainees will be challenged to achieve at the highest level in their professional practice, to become outstanding teachers and to see themselves as innovators in vocational education.

Structure, certificates and assessment

How you will learn

The Certificate in Education is composed of two distinct elements.

Year one, comprised of three mandatory modules, introduces trainees to the core roles and responsibilities of a teacher in the FES sector whilst developing their understanding of key theories and research-informed practices that can enhance their teaching, alongside a professional practice module.

Year two of the programme develops higher levels of practice through the study of three further modules.

The Level 5 LST apprentice will undertake the Cert Ed Post 14 FE and Skills programme; embedded within their apprenticeship, alongside and aligned to the Duties and KSB standards for the apprenticeship.

Delivery will be blended with a mixture of face to face and remote sessions, with a taught weekly session for half a day, followed by an afternoon supported workshop. Timely Tripartite reviews will run alongside the programme to facilitate effective tracking and support.

How you are assessed

Trainees will achieve the best possible Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs) as identified in the Occupational Standards for the Further Education, Learning and Skills Teacher.

Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs) will be mapped using Smart Assessor. Modules for the Cert Ed will follow the HE delivery schedule, to ensure quality procedures are adhered to in line with University Quality Strategy.

The End Point Assessment (EPA) will be conducted at the end of the Practical Learning Period, once the employer, the trainer and the apprentice deem that the apprentice has achieved the required KSBs at or above Level 5, as set out in the standard.

As per the Diploma in Teaching (FE and Skills) Framework Guidance, all trainees must complete 10 successful teaching observations. These are spread throughout the academic year (over 2 years for in-service trainees). 8 of the 10 are situated within two professional practice modules from an assessment perspective.

These observations allow you to demonstrate progress in your professional practice and promote a relentless focus on self-evaluation. Through the observations and the subsequent self reflections, you are able to build a portfolio of practice-based evidence to take with you to interviews and subsequently into employment. A further 2 of the 10 observations are housed in two further modules, where application of module-specific content is required.

What you will achieve

Upon successful completion of the programme, trainees can apply for and achieve QTLS (Qualified Teacher, Learning and Skills) status via a period of Professional Formation, overseen by the Society for Education and Training (SET). QTLS has legal parity with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) which is conferred by primary and secondary ITE programmes.

Fees and funding

Employers:

The cost of the apprenticeship will normally be in line with the funding band £7,000.

Apprentices:

Fees will be paid by your employer with government funded support or through the apprenticeship levy.
