Literature and History Public Conference 2023: Rivers, Lakes and Seas video transcript

7 September 2023

The Literature and History Conference is something that we run every year and as part of this, our second-year students work in groups to research, write, market and present a paper to a public audience.

We choose a different theme every year, so this year in 2023 we chose the theme of rivers, lakes and seas.

This Literature and History public conference will be the best ever. I hope you have a great day.

So, by participating in this conference, not only will it help contribute to my degree, but I think the main benefit is it helps contribute to life outside of university. Because obviously, especially now in the modern day, there's so much technology involved, there's so much public speaking involved. Getting to grips with it now and understanding how it all works and have that practice is going to really help us in the future and in our future job roles.

The marketing aspect has made me realise that that might be something I want to go into after university. It's helped a lot with writing essays as well and developing structure and overall it's been really beneficial to my uni experience as a whole so yeah.

Public conference has definitely helped with future work and perspectives so for next year, the third year, we would maybe do a dissertation showcase. So again that's public speaking, it's having confidence in your own work again, your own arguments as we make as historians say, yeah definitely that's a big reason.

Impact of our academics is - this take you to a different level, this type of work. Being able to be supported, to be in a safe space when you're able to deliver it is really, really fantastic and the team work incredibly hard and every year I come there's more students, there's more people engaged with it and I'm delighted that we've got a governor here today who's supporting and will be talking at the end.

What we're trying to do with this module is really help our students develop their strong love of the subject and their academic skills, but also as well at the same time, really important transferable skills.
