That Book You Always Meant to Write

A creative and expressive process from beginning to end

This two-day course offers an accessible introduction to all the skills needed to get started writing stories of any length, fiction or non-fiction, realistic or fantastic. It is aimed specifically at anyone who feels they 'have a book in them' but may have hesitated to finish (or even start) writing it.
Accordingly, and concisely, this course surveys the creative and expressive process from beginning to end, covering goals such as inspiration, plotting, character-building, storytelling, description and dialogue, mood and atmosphere, grabbing readers' attention and holding their engagement, the use of memory and imagination, and approaches to redrafting, editing, and workshopping, and eventual canvassing of publication opportunities as appropriate.

Simon Heywood completed a PhD in contemporary storytelling at the University of Sheffield’s National Centre for English Cultural Tradition (NATCECT) in 2001. He lectures and researches in folklore, storytelling, and creative writing at the University of Derby, and has published poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. His awards include the Best Documentary Award at the 2005 Strasbourg Film Festival for Contempt of Conscience and the 2012 BASE Best Collaboration Award with Tim Ralphs. He is the author of The Legend of Vortigern (2012) and South Yorkshire Folk Tales (2015), and co-editor of A Garment for the Moon (2026), the first volume in a major series of Cumbers family folktale anthologies. With Shonaleigh Cumbers, he is preparing The Ruby Tree. He works as a writer, storyteller, and musician. His favourite book is your next one.
