What is Responsible AI?

Friday 16 October 2026, 10:00am to 4:30pm

K103 and K102, Kirtley Building, University of Derby, Kedleston Road

This is a free one day symposium that will address the integration of generative AI within global news production on the basis of presupposed efficiencies and the growing attention that is being directed towards understanding its social, economic and environmental consequences within journalism and democratic communication.

To date, the general discussion on the integration between AI and journalism is focused on two activities in the everyday world of journalistic practices. The first of these activities is related to AI Content Licensing, where news corporations are partnering with AI companies. And, the second of these activities is Digital Transformation where corporations are investing in digital paywalls, podcasts, and audio as an alternative mode of consumption in physical decline of print circulation.

Attendees can expect to take part in a workshop and learn about how generative AI is being managed within a rapid media output society, exploring what the on-going and future potential cost is to employment structures, career trajectories and the ecological impact on climate change.
