Prospective students hoping to start university in September can access expert support with their applications ahead of the submission deadline next month.

The University of Derby Open Day on 10 January is offering the opportunity to speak with advisors offering support on the new-style UCAS personal statement ahead of the equal consideration deadline of January 14.

In previous years, the personal statement required a free-form essay, with the structure and content mostly left for the student to decide on.

This format has been replaced by three set questions, designed to demonstrate their motivations and suitability for applying to their chosen course.

Liam Dowson, Head of Schools and Colleges Engagement at the University of Derby, said:

“The personal statement is a chance to tell universities about yourself beyond your grades.

“It is an opportunity to show your interests, experiences, skills and motivations. Think of it as a way to explain who you are, why you would want to study your chosen subject, and what makes you a strong candidate.”

Dowson also shared tips on how to craft an effective personal statement. He said:

“Be specific and give real examples of your skills, experiences and achievements. Vary your sentences and start them in different ways to keep your writing engaging.

“It is also good to show a deeper understanding and genuine interest in your subject to stand out. Engaging with wider reading including books, articles, podcasts, videos or other educational materials shows universities you are informed and motivated to succeed.”

The Open Day – which runs from 9.30am until 2pm – will also give visitors the chance to meet academics, current students and graduates, attend subject talks and tour the facilities and award-winning accommodation the University of Derby has on offer.

Those who already have their grades, or predicted grades, and meet the entry requirements of the University of Derby, may be able to receive an offer in principle on the day, for enrolment in September 2026.

Hannah Wright, Associate Director – Student Recruitment at the University of Derby, said:

“Our Open Days are a great opportunity to not only receive support on your application process, but to experience first-hand what it is like to be a student at Derby.

“Guests will be able to explore our first-class facilities, meet with lecturers and current students who can give further information on our courses and find out more about our world-leading research and industry connections.”
