Derby puts student futures in focus at major national careers event

22 April 2026

Students planning their next steps in education descended on Derby to explore university life and career pathways at the UK University & Apprenticeship Search Fair.

The event, which was held at the University of Derby’s Kedleston Road site, is designed to support Year 11 and 12 students in making informed decisions about their education and careers, while also providing guidance to Year 13 students who may still need advice on their next steps.

More than 1,800 young people from across the UK attended the event where they were given the opportunity to attend seminars, tour the University’s campuses, and receive expert guidance on finance, as well as the university application process.

Visitors were able to speak directly with admissions teams, apprenticeship providers and careers advisors to explore course options and career pathways in one place.

As part of the event, prospective students were also able to participate in a ‘taster day’, giving them a first-hand experience of student life on campus with interactive table-top activities from a range of subject areas.

Professor Keith McLay, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Derby, said:

“This is the second consecutive year the University of Derby has been chosen to host this significant national event, reflecting its growing reputation as a leading destination for future-focused education. It was incredibly encouraging to see so many young people actively exploring their next steps and to be on campus at Derby.

“The event provided a powerful showcase of everything the University has to offer – from our cutting-edge facilities and wide range of programmes with strong industry links, to a welcoming environment underpinned by expert, supportive staff.”

Sixty exhibitors were on site for the UK University & Apprenticeship Search Fair with visitors splitting their time between experiencing university life and participating in taster sessions.

The next opportunity for prospective students to come and visit the University of Derby is Friday 19 and Saturday 20 June for successive Open Days.

Welcome talks will be held at both Kedleston Road and Markeaton Street sites, while experts will be on hand to share further information on degree apprenticeships.

There will also be tours of the University’s award-winning accommodation and the Cavendish Building; home of Derby International Business School.
