University of Derby’s Cavendish Building wins special award for contribution to the East Midlands

A landmark development in the heart of Derby has been recognised with a prestigious property award, coinciding with its first anniversary of its opening. 

The Cavendish Building – home to the University of Derby’s International Business School – has received a Special Recognition Award at the East Midlands Property Awards for its contribution to the region’s built environment.  

It is only the sixth time that the judging panel has chosen to confer this award in the 26-year anniversary of the awards.  

Judges acknowledged that The Cavendish Building not only achieved excellence in design and construction, but also positively influenced the community and broader region. They stated that The Cavendish Building was a ‘complex construction project’ that had ‘created an impressive landmark facility’. They added that ‘what it brings to the city and region is unique.’ 

In recognising The Cavendish Building, judges also cited its ‘genuine civic presence’ and ‘educational purpose,’ along with ‘a major atrium, specialist learning spaces and strong sustainability’ as key reasons for the award win.  

The East Midlands Property Awards celebrate excellence across the region’s property and construction sector, recognising projects and organisations that demonstrate innovation and a positive impact. The Cavendish Building was shortlisted in three categories at this year’s awards, reflecting the scale of the project.

Constructed by Kier and designed by Stride Treglown and CPMG Architects, with refurbishment specialists Overbury also working on the major project, the seven-storey building features cutting-edge facilities including a creativity lab, a finance lab for future investment bankers and technology-enabled classrooms. 

Conceived as a future-focused learning environment, The Cavendish Building was designed in close consultation with leading employers, ensuring it meets the needs of both students and industry. 

Opening in September 2025, The Cavendish Building was also recognised for its impressive design and contribution to the city’s regeneration by winning the New Building category at the 2026 Derby Civic Society A Brighter City of Derby (ABCD) Awards.
