About

I am a Professor of Contemporary Art and Co-Lead for the Creative and Cultural Industries Academic Theme. I also Co-Lead the Creative and Cultural Industries Research Centre and the animal research cluster.

From 2023 I have been Trustee of the Board of Directors of the Live Art Development Agency and a member of the UKRI Talent Peer Review College; since 2017 I have been a member of Contemporary Visual Arts Network East Midlands (CVAN EM) Steering Group, serving as Chair from 2019-2022; from 2018 an elected Executive Board member of the Society for Artistic Research (SAR), and elected Vice President since 2024; from 2020 a selected member of the CHEAD Research Alliance Strategy Group; and an appointed Collaborations Champion for the National Centre for Academic and Cultural Exchange (NCACE) since 2021.

I gained a PhD in Fine Art practice and theory from Middlesex University and am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I work as an External Examiner for MA Fine Art at De Montfort University and regularly examine the work of external PhD candidates.

I was made a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Art, Caine College of the Arts, Utah State University, in 2021.

Teaching responsibilities

I supervise and examine internal and external PhD submissions.

Research interests

I work as an artist and artistic researcher. My research focuses on documentation as an act of ephemeral art process, and with animality and empathy (as acted and/or intuitively behaved) in human-animal companion-species relationships. These subjects are analysed through live art, video, sculpture and published texts.

The research with companion species is specifically with dogs (and more recently horses and cats) and the critical and social contexts in which they have relevance. I led the research project, The Alternative Document (2015-2020), which includes exhibitions, published texts and symposia seeking appropriate strategies for the legacies of experiential and transient art practice. My work with interspecies interconnectivity informs Animal, an interdisciplinary research cluster that I co-founded with Professor Steve Baker in 2019.
