About

My role as Assistant Head of Discipline involves leading the operational side of Public Health and Social Care, and specifically leading on Apprenticeships, Outreach and Recruitment.

As a Senior Lecturer and module lead, I plan, teach, and assess the Community Health Promotion and Health Improvement module. I also conduct research, write publications, and contribute to the University's civic agenda.

Teaching responsibilities

The key subject I teach is Community Health Promotion, which aligns with my practical and teaching experience and is part of the Masters in Public Health and the Masters in Leadership for Health and Social Care programmes.

Research interests

My main research interests focus on using physical activity to improve Public Health, including broader considerations of health promotion in educational environments, health inequalities, and social justice. My current research explores staff perceptions of promoting physical activity within further education colleges. This demonstrates my qualitative approach to study, embeds philosophical theories, and aims to inform practice.

In addition, my research into the stigma surrounding fitness professionals working within a social prescribing world is at a very early stage. However, both research topics allow me to find the correlation between Public Health and the world of sport, fitness, and physical activity, thus aligning my personal and professional interests.

Experience in industry

My early work as a community sports coordinator marked the start of my journey in community health. This experience let me work in community settings, using sports participation to engage children in physical activity. After that, my work as a personal trainer and then an exercise and lifestyle coach enabled me to work with individuals with non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. In this role, I used physical activity and nutritional guidance to support individuals referred by their GP. Moreover, this role extended to fall prevention work using strength, balance, and coordination training. The experience gained in this role has enabled me to continue providing these services on a 1-2-1 freelance basis, keeping my industry practice current through ad hoc engagements.

My teaching career began by delivering health and fitness qualifications in various community settings across England, allowing me to experience different cultures and perspectives on health and healthcare. These experiences led me to become an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Champion, which I continue to support.

Currently, I am working with community health companies as a consultant and advisor for health promotion activities using physical activity and nutrition for the reduction of health inequalities. This consultancy involves working with primary and secondary schools on the integration of physical activity into their curriculum and teaching practice.
