Join a subject session starting with an introduction to the important roles Allied Health Professionals provide in supporting people to live healthier, more independent lives. 

Through a practical, scenario-based activity, you will work through a patient journey from diagnosis and investigation, through treatment and rehabilitation, to recovery and everyday living. You will explore how different Allied Health Professionals contribute at each stage, and how teamwork and communication shape safe and effective care.

The next activity focuses on decision-making in practice, looking at how Allied Health Professionals assess risk, adapt interventions, and respond to real-world constraints such as time, resources, and patient choice.

The session will then finish with a reflective discussion about what it means to work in this field, the realities of professional practice, and the skills and attributes needed to succeed in these careers.

One of the most critical aspects of Animation is understanding the timing and spacing of keyframes and in-between frames. By combining these elements, we can give the illusion of life to our animated elements (objects, characters, backdrops). Today, you’ll complete a simple bouncing ball animation exercise to experiment with some of the 12 key principles of Animation.

During your Biology and Zoology subject session, you will identify where different water samples have come from using biological and chemical evidence. By using invertebrate species, microbes, and measuring abiotic factors to decide which habitat the water samples have been collected from, you will test your ecological and scientific reasoning skills.

You will be given three water samples and will explore identification methods like microscopy and species ID, plus water tests, to find out the source locations.

Your Earth Science subject session will be based on 'Discovering the past, planning for the future'.

You will examine a range of rock samples, sediments, 3D virtual outcrop models and some of the unique specimens from our geological collections to interpret and understand past environments. You shall discover where dinosaurs once roamed, where coral reefs grew in tropical seas, and where volcanoes violently erupted.

Using your newly acquired skills, you will then bring your ideas together to create a palaeogeographical map of the depositional environments located within the classroom to understand how the environments are linked and what they would have looked like millions of years ago.

During this subject session, you will explore how literature represents encounters with ‘non-human’ and ‘more-than-human’ beings.

In paying close attention to literary depictions of and meetings between a range of critters and creatures, you will learn about these concepts, reflect on how they might relate to cultural understandings of race, gender, and the environment, and how it inspires us to reflect on what it means to be ‘human’ in the first place.

Your Environmental Science and Sustainability subject session will explore "Sustainable Regeneration: Envisioning a sustainable future for Mercaston".

During this session, you will be using maps, data and case studies to create a proposal for the redevelopment of the disused quarry site at Mercaston. You will be working in small groups to put together a proposal which sees the restoration of the regions biodiversity, as well as engaging the public in the industrial heritage of the region. Your proposal should be sustainable and economically self-sustaining and address the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This challenge is based on a real-life scenario set by one of our industrial partners.

During this practical session, you will receive an induction into the film studio at the University of Derby. We will cover basic operation of our professional film cameras, use three-point lighting, explore dollies and fluid heads, and review footage from a range of different sources to examine the impact of lighting, contrast ratios and smooth camera operations.

In this session, we will talk about our approach to teaching through dialogue and the notion of Show and Listen critique – thinking about the artist's intention and the audience/viewer’s interpretation.

Here, we introduce the idea of critique as a taster session using existing Level 5/6 work set up in project spaces. We then run the critique session as a way of drawing out and showing different responses to the work.

Alongside this session, we will be offering portfolio reviews for any students who elect to bring work in with them. We may be able to issue additional UCAS offers based on the quality of the work shown.

You will be given a word prompt to experiment with and develop a series of outcomes. We will provide you with a random word from the themed box of words. This is like a tombola, and you will be tasked to explore through your imagination and recall the word given.

Each student will pull out a paper ticket showing a different word stimulus. Students are asked to draw their object or thing, using their visual memory. This links us to the mental index of the mind, or mind’s eye, where things are stored and can be shared.

Take part in an immersive, practical, discussion-rich activity built around a diverse selection of picture books and early chapter books.

Explore how stories support emotional development, language growth, imagination, and early critical thinking by rotating through themed stations, each featuring books that highlight different functions of literature, such as identity, empathy, humour, problem-solving, or cultural understanding. At each station, you will analyse illustrations, narrative structure, vocabulary choices, and opportunities for cross-curricular links, then reflect on how these texts could be used with younger and older primary pupils.

Through a supported case study activity, you will explore real-world health and social care practice, considering the perspectives of different professionals and the people who use services.
