In this latest issue, we take a positive look at the future, from the East Midlands devolution deal to the impact of the Civic University Agreement and research that is supporting healthy ageing. We are also inspired by Harpreet Chandi MBE, Derby alumni and honorand who has embarked on a monumental solo expedition across Antarctica.

Editor's Letter

I can’t recall a time, aside from the Covid pandemic, when the country faced so many challenges – a revolving door of Prime Ministers (it’s hard to keep track!), economic instability, the long-lasting impact of Covid and the cost of living crisis – it’s almost unthinkable. Yet being in ‘crisis-mode’ seems to have become the norm, it’s just one drama after the next.

It would be easy, therefore, to become consumed by all the doom and gloom – particularly now we’re faced with fewer daylight hours, which is why I feel so lucky to work for a university (specifically the University of Derby) - it really is the perfect tonic and a place that puts a smile on your face.

A university is full of aspiration, ambition and a mindset where anything is possible. When you come onto campus and soak up the atmosphere and energy there’s something so positive about it – here people want to learn, share ideas, create opportunities, inspire each other, make a difference and do better.

This magazine issue shares some of that positive sentiment and sense of optimism, with features on devolution and the opportunities that will bring to the region, our Civic University Agreement and the impact it’s already having, important research taking place to support healthy ageing and spotlights on both student and alumni success. Some of the more challenging issues - including the cost of living crisis and efforts to make the city safer - are also tackled.

We also spend ‘5 minutes with’ Lord Burlington, Chancellor of the University and recently appointed Chair of the Business School Council, and are well and truly blown away by Harpreet Chandi, a University of Derby alumni and honorand who has embarked on a solo expedition across Antarctica. Reading her inspirational story and many words of wisdom will leave you in awe – the mental resilience required to take on such a monumental challenge is huge and makes you think that despite the ‘madness’ going on around us, anything is possible if you set your mind to it.
