Action-packed day planned for finalists of UK Young Adventurers Awards 2015

The finalists of the UK Young Adventurers Awards 2015 are to be treated to an action-packed day of activities at the University of Derby’s Oaklands Manor Outdoor Leadership Centre.

The competition aims to recognise youngsters who excel at adventure sports and push boundaries to reach their potential. 

Numerous entries were received for this year’s awards and have now been whittled down to 12 entries across four categories; Junior Adventurer of the Year (aged 7-11), Adventurer of the Year (aged 12-17), Team of the Year and Derbyshire Adventurer of the Year. 

All finalists and their families have been invited to a special awards ceremony on October 10, where attendees will be able to take part in outdoor activities at Oaklands Manor, which is set in 58 acres of mixed woodland.

Dr Chris Bussell, Dean of College of Life and Natural Sciences – who is on the panel of judges for the awards – said: “It is fantastic to have the University involved and supporting the 2015 Young Adventurers Awards and to celebrate the amazing achievements of young people from across the country and their exploration of the great outdoors.

“Seeing the confidence, courage and passion the nominees have for their activities, whether it be water sports, cycling, hillwalking, mountaineering, fell running orienteering, climbing or their personal support of others in enabling them to experience outdoor adventure, is truly inspiring.

“It is a pleasure to host this year’s event at our outdoor adventure centre, Oaklands Manor. It is the perfect setting to celebrate and acknowledge the amazing achievements of all those nominated.”

This year’s judging panel includes Dr Chris Bussell, Adam Evans, an outdoor leadership and personal development coach, lecturer and guide, Mark Sears, Chief Wild Officer of The Wild Network and Co-Director of Derbyshire Sport, Hayley Lever. 

The winners be announced and presented their awards at the event by Shauna Coxsey, Head Coach for the RAF Climbing Team and winner of two World Cup Golds for Bouldering.

Shauna will also give a guest lecture at the event about her achievements.

As well as a trophy, the winner of each category will receive a GoPro HERO4 Session Camera to help document their future adventures.

The University’s new Vice-Chancellor, Kathryn Mitchell, will also be attending the event.
