Vakalo Art & Design College (Athens, Greece)

Vakalo Art & Design College was established in 1958 by a team of artists, designers and theorists, headed by George Vakalo.

The College was founded with the aim of offering courses in what was then called 'the applied arts', a field which was not covered by Greek education at the time. The College was unique and held in high esteem. Today the College's design programmes are on an internationally acknowledged level of higher education, and the College enjoys a strong reputation as a recognised leader in its field in Greece.

The design programmes were developed by the Vakalo Art & Design College, a private design college, and submitted for external validation by University of Derby. Although there are no corresponding home programmes, staff in the University of Derby School of Art and Design worked closely with Vakalo in terms of providing advice and guidance during the development phase, and this close working relationship has continued with regular visits and monitoring by University of Derby staff.

The undergraduate programmes are delivered in full-time mode and attract students aged 18 years and above who have completed their secondary education. The postgraduate programmes are also delivered in both full-time and part-time modes and are designed for students who have normally obtained a good first degree in Design. All programmes are delivered and assessed in Greek (with a provision allowing non-native Greek speakers to submit written work in English).
