Annex 1: Competition Details

McDonald's Change Challenge 2026/2027 is a joint competition for schools: Inspiring Youth for a Greener Future.

McDonald's is on a bold journey to achieve net zero emissions by 2040 across its entire business and value chain. This includes over 4 million daily customers, 1,500 restaurants, 170,000 people, and 29,000 farmers. Every small change adds up, and we believe the next generation's ideas can help us make meaningful progress.

The University of Derby shares this vision. Despite being located 75 miles from the coast, it has emerged as a world leader in coral research, pioneering techniques for inducing coral reproduction in the laboratory. Beyond groundbreaking marine studies, the University is committed to sustainability across campuses, research programs, and community outreach.

Now, McDonald's and the University of Derby have joined forces to invite young people across the UK to propose innovative solutions for a more sustainable future.

Let's work together to reimagine a greener tomorrow.

McDonald's "Plan for Change" sets ambitious goals to lead the change in bringing a more sustainable future for everyone. They're building net-zero restaurants, sourcing sustainable ingredients, and aiming for fully recyclable or reusable packaging by 2027. But McDonald's can't do it alone, and there is a significant challenge ahead of us to close the loop on waste. With the help of the next generation of changemakers, we can build a future that's truly planet positive.

Let's change a little to change a lot.

By 2027, McDonald’s is aiming for all its restaurant waste to be given a second life so that nothing is truly wasted. Instead, it is recycled, reused or composted. The business is working hard for this, but it isn't easy, and it needs your help.

We’re calling on young people in schools and at home to help us close the loop on waste.

Innovation to close the loop on waste

Who: School years 12-13 / ages 16-18, individually or in eco-teams of up to 5.

The challenge: Recycling our food packaging is hugely important, and McDonald's has introduced recycling points in its UK restaurants that allow customers to easily separate paper, plastic, cups and food waste. Could these separation points be even better, with customers feeling encouraged and empowered to enjoy using them? And to truly close the loop on waste, we need to think beyond just packaging. From composting and reusing ingredient waste to recycling Happy Meal toys, how else can we ensure the future of all waste is truly circular?

Your mission: Create a short, fun, creative video to showcase your own innovation to help us truly close the loop on waste. Be bold and creative; could this involve a new idea, design or incentive? Ensure your video highlights the impact of your innovation to ensure the future of all waste is truly circular.
