Changes to the U5 College Bus Service

From September 1, Buxton will no longer run a shuttle bus service between Buxton and Leek on college days.

The U5 service will run as a morning and evening service only. Please check the timetable for further details.

There will also be a charge for using the U5 bus service, and you will need a bus pass to be able to board. Please complete a bus pass application form before September 1.

As the U5 is now a charged service, you may be able to access bursary support towards the cost.

Bus pass routes and timetables

Routes and timetables

Please note that all timetables are subject to change. Students must also comply with the transport code of conduct, and any breaches may be dealt with through the college disciplinary procedure.

In severe weather conditions, we may offer a reduced service. Check the weather page for the latest updates.

Bus passes

All new and returning University of Derby – Buxton students will need to complete a bus pass application form to obtain a bus pass.

If you are under 18 years old, you may need support and information from your parent or guardian to complete this form.

Once you have completed the online application form, you will be directed to make payment via the Online Store. Please ensure that you have completed the Bus Pass Application Form before making payment, and please keep a copy of your receipt.

Bus passes will be issued when you start studying, subject to a completed application form and initial payment (in full or in instalments) or bursary completion.

We will arrange temporary bus passes for the first few weeks. These will only be issued to students who have applied for a bus pass and plan to use the service, so it is essential to apply as soon as possible.

Students applying or enrolling on programmes at UoD – Buxton in 2025/26 will be subject to charges on the college buses.

Dependent on where you will be travelling from, your charge band will be listed on the bus timetables for the stop you will be using.

For learners enrolled in full-time or part-time further education study programmes or supported internships, we offer bursary funding to help reduce or cover the cost of a bus pass, subject to availability.

As bursary funding is limited, it will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis to learners who submit an eligible application with mandatory evidence.

The college bus pass application form will ask questions to determine your eligibility to apply for a bursary.

Please note that learners living on viable public transport routes are not eligible for direct payments. Instead, they may receive travel pass contributions. Direct payments are for exceptional circumstances and must be evidenced.

If you have any questions about bus passes or bus pass payments, or need to make changes to your bus pass, please contact the FE Curriculum Support team.

Trains

Buxton station is only a five-minute walk from the Devonshire Campus.

Buxton has direct trains from Manchester Oxford Road and Manchester Piccadilly, via Stockport. The journey takes about an hour.

You can also travel to Sheffield, which involves at least one change.

There is no train station in or near Leek.

Bicycles and Motorbikes

Cycling

The Devonshire Campus has facilities for cyclists to store their bikes free of charge in the sheltered bays, which are located behind the old gatehouse.

There are showers within the catering changing rooms that staff and students can use to freshen up.

Whilst we have security on-site, bikes should be locked securely. Heavy-duty bike locks can be obtained from the security office at a heavily subsidised rate.

Motorcycling

Motorcyclists are welcome at the Devonshire Campus. Motorcycles do not require a parking permit and can be parked free of charge on site.

There is a sheltered motorcycle parking area within the main car park.

Student Car Parking

Please be aware that there is no student parking on site.

We recommend you park in the Pavilion Gardens car park, which is around five minutes' walk away on Burlington Road, near the junction with St. John's Road. There is usually ample space during term time.

You can purchase a special season ticket at a heavily discounted student rate from High Peak Borough Council, otherwise reasonable pay and display rates apply. Access to the campus is easiest if you park on the top deck, at the opposite end of the ramp.

If you choose to park on the street, please bear in mind that traffic wardens operate in the area who will penalise those who park illegally.

To park considerately, we ask the following:

  • Please do not park on junctions
  • Please do not block driveways or dropped kerbs
  • Please consider residents' parking needs

We thank you in advance for your help and consideration. How you park your car can impact people’s attitude and perception of students and the University.
