Cyber security has become one of the most critical areas in today’s digital world. As organisations increasingly rely on cloud computing, AI and connected technologies, the scale and complexity of cyber threats continues to grow.

The MSc Advanced Cyber Security is designed to equip you with the advanced knowledge and practical skills needed to secure modern digital systems. You’ll learn how to analyse threats, design secure architectures and implement effective defence strategies across enterprise and critical infrastructure environments.

The programme combines deep technical expertise with an understanding of the ethical, legal and governance challenges that shape cyber security practice. You’ll also complete an independent project, giving you the opportunity to explore a real-world problem or emerging area in depth.

What you will study

You will complete six taught 20-credit modules, and one 60-credit Independent Scholarship project which will allow you to apply your knowledge to a real-world cyber security challenge or research problem, often linked to industry or current global threats.

How you will learn

This programme combines advanced technical teaching with practical, applied learning to prepare you for real-world cyber security challenges.

You’ll study a total of 180 credits at Level 7, building both theoretical understanding and applied expertise.

Study options

You can study this course full-time or part-time, with flexible routes designed to fit around your circumstances.

Full-time study

Full-time study allows you to complete the MSc in 12-18 months, depending on your start date. You can begin in either September (Autumn entry) or January (Spring entry).

This route is ideal if you want to fast-track your qualification and move quickly into advanced cyber security roles.

Part-time study

Part-time on-campus study is available in two modes: Standard and Accelerated. Entry points are the same as full-time study (September and January).

Standard mode: Typically completed in approximately 3- 4 years. You will normally study one module per semester, allowing flexibility to balance your studies with work or other commitments.

Accelerated mode: Typically completed in approximately 2-3 years. You may study one or two modules per semester, depending on module availability and your preferred pace of study.

You may be able to switch between part-time modes during your course (subject to approval).

Please note: Part-time study is not available for students requiring a UK study visa.

Teaching hours

Like most universities, we operate extended teaching hours at the University of Derby, so contact time with your lecturers and tutors could be anytime between 9am and 9pm. Your timetable will usually be available on the website 24 hours after enrolment on to your course.

Assessment is designed to mirror real-world cyber security practice, enabling you to develop both the technical expertise and professional skills expected by industry. Rather than relying solely on traditional exams, the course focuses on practical, hands-on assessment that reflects contemporary cyber security roles and challenges.

Throughout the course, you will work with modern cyber security tools, methodologies, and scenarios designed to strengthen your practical problem-solving, analytical thinking, and professional communication skills.

Your final Independent Scholarship project provides an opportunity to investigate and solve a complex cyber security challenge in an area of specialist interest, demonstrating your ability to apply advanced technical knowledge, research capability, and critical thinking to real-world problems.

Entry requirements

Applicants should normally hold a minimum 2:1 undergraduate honours degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant subject such as Computer Science, Cyber Security, Computing, Software Engineering, Computer Networks, or a closely related technical discipline.

Applicants with a 2:2 classification, or a degree in a less directly related subject, may still be considered where they can demonstrate relevant professional experience, strong technical capability, or additional qualifications such as a Master’s degree, PGDip, or recognised professional certifications.

Applicants without a directly relevant academic background may also be considered if they have a minimum of 2-3 years of relevant industry experience in a computing, cyber security, networking, IT infrastructure, or related technical role.

We may invite you to an interview to assess your suitability, motivation, communication skills, and readiness for postgraduate study. Interviews are normally conducted by the Programme Leader and may take place online or by telephone where appropriate.

English language qualifications

If English is not your first language, or you have not successfully completed your highest level of qualification in English, you will need an English language qualification equivalent to a minimum IELTS (International English Language Testing System) average score of 6.0 or equivalent.

Please note: International qualifications will be assessed for equivalency according to UK ENIC (formerly NARIC) guidelines and the university's international admissions policy.
