University of Derby Sustainability Statement

The University of Derby acknowledges the climate and ecological emergency and recognises the impact and responsibility it has as an anchor-organisation to take proactive and positive steps to reduce its carbon impact and advance its environmental sustainability.  As an institution of higher education and a centre of excellence in research and innovation, the University of Derby aims to develop globally conscious graduates and deliver impactful solutions to the issues and processes that are both causing and a result of some of the challenges faced as a result of climate change and biodiversity loss.

The University Environmental Sustainability Strategy outlines six core aspects which the University will focus on to progress towards a sustainable future.

• Staff and student engagement
• Civic engagement
• Education for Sustainable Development
• Food, waste and water
• Carbon management
• Biodiversity

The main focus of activities across these six aspects are to engage with staff and students, promoting a shift towards new relationships with nature and the environment as well as take pro-environmental decisions and actions. The University of Derby adopts a holistic approach to sustainability across every area of its activity and actively supports sustainable development in the region and wider. The journey to sustainable futures is complex and unpredictable; however, the University of Derby recognises the need to take timely decisions in order to prepare our students, staff and wider communities to create long-lasting and nature positive contributions to Society, Place and Planet.
