James Coghlan

BSC (HONS) SOUND, LIGHT AND LIVE EVENT ENGINEERING

Class of 2014

From Derby student to international touring engineer

Since graduating from the University of Derby, James has forged a career as a successful sound system engineer in the live events industry. His work spans cutting‑edge audio design, large-format touring, sound system optimisation, and large-scale AOIP networks, skills rooted in his academic experience at Derby and developed through major professional opportunities.

James held the position of  Sound System Engineer for multi-award-winning rock band Biffy Clyro, where he led the system design and optimisation across their global Futique tour. In 2026, this tour became the first international tour in the world to achieve HELA (Healthy Ears, Limited Annoyance) Certification for responsible sound management, a landmark achievement in responsible sound management.

HELA Certification is the world’s first global certification dedicated to promoting safe, sustainable and evidence‑based sound practices across the live events sector. Developed by researchers within the Electro‑Acoustics Research Lab (EARLab) at the University of Derby alongside international experts, HELA Initiative was launched on World Hearing Day in 2025 in response to growing concerns about unsafe listening levels, noise impact, and the long‑term hearing health of audiences and industry professionals.

James completed HELA Certification himself and applied evidence-based design principles to reduce auditory risk for audiences, performers and crew.

This internationally recognised certification reflects a major shift in the live events industry - moving toward safer, more sustainable touring practices that balance artistic intent with audience wellbeing. James’s leadership in achieving HELA Certification on the Futique tour demonstrates both his technical excellence and his commitment to shaping the future of responsible, research‑led live sound.

James comments,

“Responsible sound management is vital to the future of live music. Being part of the first HELA Ccertified international tour has been a brilliant landmark to be involved in.. It’s been incredibly rewarding to take research developed at Derby and put it into practice on an international stage.”

A Derby Education that Translates Worldwide

James credits much of the start of his career to his time at Derby, not just because of the course itself, but because of the people and connections he built while studying. The practical, industry-focused environment meant students were regularly working with and connecting with visiting professionals, technicians, and companies already active within the live events industry. His degree equipped him with:

James shares,

“The lecturers at Derby genuinely care about their students’ futures. Their support and industry insights were invaluable, and having access to the real-world experience from many of the staff made a huge difference in shaping my career path.”

His career progression, from student projects to global touring, is a testament to Derby’s commitment to supporting graduates who shape, influence and future‑proof the live events sector.

James adds,

“My time at the University of Derby gave me the technical foundation and critical thinking skills I rely on every day in live sound. The combination of hands-on experience, industry‑standard tools, and supportive lecturers prepared me to step confidently into my career, touring throughout the world.”

Advice for anyone looking to pursue a similar career

James comments:

“If you want to build a career in live sound, stay curious and say yes to opportunities - especially the ones that push you outside your comfort zone. Technical skills matter, but what it ultimately boils down to is understanding what you’re hearing and why.

Spend time learning the science behind what you do. The stronger your understanding of the fundamentals, the less you’ll rely on guesswork when things get challenging.

Just as importantly, attitude matters. The touring world is small, and your reputation travels quickly. People want to work with those who work hard and are good to be around. If you treat people well and do your job to the best of your ability, the opportunities tend to follow.”

James comments:

“A lot of what got me started came through the people I met while I was at Derby. The course gave me a solid technical foundation, but just as importantly, it put me in the same room as people already working in the industry. Those connections opened doors and helped me get my first opportunities in touring.”
