Speaker (on‑site at University of Derby):

“Really excited that it's National apprenticeship week here at the University of Derby and behind me you might be able to see the high number of would‑be apprentices and employers that are here on site today. We know that getting the right skills out in industry is going to be really important for the future success not only of Derby and Derbyshire but also for the whole of the nation as well. So we've worked really hard with our employers and we know that having strong partnerships is really important to get them to come in, meet those young people that might want to be their apprentices of the future, and for the young people to find out about what opportunities there are going forwards for them.

“Yes, the reason you guys are all here today is to find out about degree apprenticeships and exactly what we offer and who we work with, and we are very much the university for degree apprenticeships and we ranked top five for course quality, and top five for employability, and top 15 UK University — and that's out of all the universities in the UK.

“There’s some real advantages to undertaking an apprenticeship: first of all you're already going into a real world environment because you’re going to be working in an organisation who is investing in your future. So you'll learn about the different skills that you need, the different behaviours that you need to adopt, and the knowledge that you'll need in order to be able to undertake that role. One of the things that people think is really important is that you're going to be earning a wage whilst you're going through that training process and of course at the end of the programme, you won't come away with the student debt that others would do if they'd come through the university route.

“An apprenticeship will transform your life and it will transform the lives of the people that are in the organisation that you're going into because as you're learning, they'll be learning as well. So lots of really important reasons why you should think about apprenticeships as a really sensible option when you come out of school or college or even later in life when you've got an opportunity to change careers.”
