Congratulations on your new role! We've put together some useful information to get you started.

Pre-employment checks

Before your first day, we must ensure all compliance checks are complete. If you haven’t already provided us with evidence of your right to work in the UK, please call us to arrange a suitable time to bring this in. We also require evidence that you hold the essential qualifications for the role, as listed on the Job Description, as well as the highest qualification you hold, as stated on your application form.

If you haven’t already provided your consent for us to contact your referees, we will email you to obtain your permission. Please ensure that you have informed your referees that we will be in touch as your offer of employment will remain conditional until two satisfactory references have been received.

We will also email you a link to complete your onboarding, where you can review the personal details we hold for you, as well as provide information such as your bank details and emergency contacts. Attached to this email will also be your offer letter and contract of employment, so please ensure you read these carefully before you accept the terms and conditions.

If you have declared a disability on your application form, or if you require clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) we will contact you to discuss.

Car parking

Limited parking permits are available for staff, at a cost of 0.35% of your annual salary. Please note that whilst every effort is made to provide car parking spaces, the permit does not guarantee a parking space and, if a car park is full, off-site parking should be sought.

Your first day

Once you have received confirmation of your start date, you should discuss with your line manager the arrangements of your first day. You will visit the library where you will receive your iD badge as well as the access details for your computer account.

If you have requested a parking permit, it should be ready to collect from reception.

Once you have started you will have access to the University’s intranet site. Here you can familiarise yourself with some of the policies and procedures that may be relevant to your new role.

You will also have access to MyHub, our HR portal, which enables you to view and manage some of your personal details, such as your address and bank details, and also request annual leave and view your payslips. MyHub will also hold details of your annual appraisals and will record any University 'Continuing Professional Development' (CPD) sessions you attend.

Induction

During your first few days, your line manager will meet with you and explain the local induction programme designed to help you settle quickly and easily into your new role and surroundings. This is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions, such as start and finish times and discuss any pre-booked holiday you may have.

Within your first few months, you will also be expected to engage in central induction activity. This entails an online orientation module and, where appropriate, a mandatory half-day central induction which will give you a much wider overview of the University, including its mission and future goals, as well as an opportunity to meet other colleagues who are new to the university.

My Learning

My Learning is the University’s staff learning platform which is designed to help support your online learning and development. As a new employee, you will be automatically enrolled on to a number of courses that you will need to complete within the first three months of your employment, including our ‘Welcome to the University of Derby’ module, which will give you an insight into University life.

We look forward to you joining the University of Derby and hope that you enjoy your time with us.
