Disabled students' support

We provide a wide range of support for disabled students and students with medical conditions. Our dedicated team of Disability Advisers aim to support students to fulfil their academic potential by removing challenges to learning.

Types of support available

Our programmes are designed to be inclusive, so you'll receive the support you need throughout your studies. Some examples of inclusive teaching practices we offer are:

• Presentation slides or lecture notes available before the lecture: This will help you familiarise yourself with the lecture content and make notes in advance, so you don't have to write down information that's already provided.
• Recorded lectures (where appropriate): You can review the lectures later to catch any information you missed or need to hear again. Subtitles can be added and transcript of the lecture is also provided through the recording.
• Personal academic tutor who can support your throughout your programme. Feel free to ask your tutor for more detailed information on assignments or to get verbal feedback on assessments.
• Alternative/adapted assessments (when appropriate): Your tutor can discuss different assessment options that might suit you better.

University life is about independence, growth, and learning how to manage your studies and wellbeing. By taking these simple steps early on, you’re giving yourself the best chance to succeed.

Disabled Students' Allowance

The main support you'll receive at university is through the Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA). It's really important you apply as soon as possible because this is what our students find to be the most beneficial support.

DSA is a non-repayable grant to cover some of the extra costs you may have because of a disability or long term condition. It can also help to cover costs of specialist equipment and non-medical support such as a mentor or tutor.

• Specialist software and equipment: This could include a laptop and assistive software.
• Specialist study skills support: A study skills tutor will help you understand your learning style, embrace your strengths, and develop strategies to overcome challenges.
• Specialist mentor support: Support building vital stills in time management, organisation, and prioritising.

All students are assessed based on their individual need and the support will be bespoke to your specific disability or condition. You’ll be able to apply for this once you have your Student Finance England loans account set up.
