Sexual Misconduct Support

Our Sexual Violence and Misconduct Liaison Officers (SVLOs) are trained to support students who have been directly or indirectly affected by recent or historical incidents of sexual violence or misconduct.

What is a Sexual Violence Liaison Officer (SVLO)?

The role of a SVLO is to assist the reportee or the reported in accessing the support they need following an incident of harassment and sexual misconduct. The SVLO will explain available options without judgement or pressure on the person to take action. They can assist in signposting to specialist services, health care, sexual assault referral centres, the police and the reporting procedures within the University. They take on the single point of contact role to support the student.

How do I contact a University SVLO?

You can contact the team through the cause for concern form. If it is an emergency situation, you can contact 999 for immediate help.
Please let us know if you would prefer to be supported by an SVLO of a certain gender, and we will do our best to try and meet that choice. We can offer support via telephone, email, video calls or face-to-face appointments.

How can an SVLO help me?

SVLOs can support the reportees and the reported students. Different SVLOs will be allocated to each person. They can support any student who has experienced sexual violence, harassment, abuse, misconduct, inappropriate behaviour, regardless of whether it has been officially reported.

The sexual violence can be current or historic. If you believe you may have experienced sexual violence, you can reach out to a trained SVLO who can support you. If in doubt, please get in touch.

James Stanney University of Derby

Having supported students at the University for many years I felt it was important to be trained as an SVLO, so I am best able to assist those who have been affected by sexual violence and misconduct. I believe it is important as an institution to build and strengthen practices in this area so none of our students feel they are alone when facing a situation of this nature.

Sarah Jones - University of Derby

My name is Sarah; I am part of the Disability Advisor Team who carries out the role of a trained Sexual Violence Liaison Officer. I trained to be a SVLO as I want to provide compassionate, non-judgemental support to help students navigate their choices around their experience with sexual violence.
