Ramsey Funwie

MSc Information Technology

Class of 2025

Ramsey is an AI and Digital Innovation Specialist at CTI Digital, where he works at the forefront of emerging technologies, applying innovation to real-world business challenges.

University journey

Ramsey chose to study at the University of Derby because of its strong focus on technology and marketing, alongside its welcoming and supportive environment for international students. Ramsey made a deliberate decision to study at Derby, confident it would provide both academic rigour and the personal support needed to thrive.

Looking back, what stands out most from Ramsey’s time at Derby is the strong sense of community. As an international student, adjusting to a new country and education system came with challenges, but the support he received, particularly from the Union of Students, helped him feel at home and supported throughout his journey.

One of his favourite memories was working closely with his dissertation supervisor, Wajahat Ali Khan, who encouraged him to explore reinforcement learning in marketing. This project became Ramsey’s proudest achievement at Derby and played a pivotal role in shaping his career direction.

Passion combined with innovation and creativity

During his studies, Ramsey developed a strong interest in emerging technologies and their application within marketing. He actively sought opportunities to explore ideas beyond the curriculum, combining creative thinking with technical curiosity.

His dissertation on reinforcement learning in marketing allowed him to bridge academic theory with practical application. More than an academic project, it became a powerful example of his ability to think ahead of the curve, something that later proved invaluable in interviews and professional conversations.

Early challenges and breakthroughs

After graduating, Ramsey began his career in the innovation and technology sector, where adaptability and confidence were key. One of his biggest breakthroughs came through networking rather than traditional recruitment routes.

While volunteering at a tech event and serving refreshments, Ramsey struck up conversations about his university experience, research interests and future ambitions. By openly sharing what he had studied at Derby and what he could offer, he caught the attention of industry leaders. This led to two job offers from CEOs impressed by his insight into emerging technology trends.

Outside of work, he enjoys reading poetry, going on scenic hikes, and unwinding with a glass of Whispering Angel on days when the vibe is not quite cooperate.
