Public Engagement

At the University of Derby, Public Engagement is about bringing people, communities and the University together to share knowledge, exchange ideas and create positive change.

Our staff and students work with communities, organisations and individuals locally, nationally and internationally, creating opportunities for people to participate in and shape our research, teaching and civic activity.

Public Engagement takes place across the University and is embedded through three interconnected areas: research, civic activity and teaching.

What is Public Engagement?

Public Engagement describes the many ways universities and the public interact, share knowledge and work together.

At Derby, this can include communities helping to shape research, academics sharing their expertise with wider audiences, students working on live projects with external organisations, public events and activities, collaborative projects and long-term partnerships.

The aim is not simply to communicate what the University is doing, but to create opportunities for meaningful two-way engagement that benefits both the University and the people and organisations we work with.

Public Engagement at Derby

Public Engagement takes many different forms across the University. Our activity can broadly be explored through three interconnected pathways.

Civic

As a Civic University, Derby works with communities and partners to respond to challenges, create opportunities and generate positive impact across our city, county and beyond.

Our civic activity brings together University expertise, students, community organisations, public bodies and other partners through projects, events, research and collaborative programmes.

You can explore our Civic activity, discover CivicLAB and read more about our Civic University Agreement.

Teaching

Public Engagement is also embedded in teaching and learning, giving students opportunities to use their knowledge and skills beyond the classroom.

This could include live briefs, community projects, placements, exhibitions, events, consultancy, research projects and other opportunities for students to collaborate with external organisations and communities.

The impact of Public Engagement

Our approach to Public Engagement is focused on creating meaningful relationships and demonstrable impact.

Across the University, our teams work with communities and partners to develop projects that share knowledge, create opportunities and respond to real-world challenges.
