Civic pride

The Civic Hub brings together a diverse range of projects, programmes and partnerships that connect communities, creativity and civic action. Here you can discover our flagship initiatives, including S.H.E.D. (Social Higher Education Depot), the Civic Community Fund, Make/Shift (Arts Council England's Creative People and Places programme in North East Derbyshire), our National Saturday Club, CivicLAB, the National Civic Alchemy Network, and the UNESCO UK Learning Cities Network.

Through these initiatives, we work alongside communities, researchers, students, public sector organisations and partners to create opportunities for participation, learning and innovation. CivicLAB plays a key role in this work as a collaborative platform for civic innovation, bringing people together to explore ideas, share knowledge and co-design practical solutions to real-world social, cultural and environmental challenges.

Together, these programmes help strengthen communities, foster creativity, support lifelong learning and drive positive change through partnership, participation and place-based action.

Our Civic Goals

The five goals set out within the Civic University Agreement have been developed in direct response to both the challenges and opportunities facing Derby, Derbyshire and the communities within it. They are designed to make a long-lasting positive impact on the city and county, bringing benefits to many.

Our accreditations

Public engagement is core to our civic activity. Across various regional projects and activities, the University welcomes members of the public to get involved as participants, co-researchers, and audiences, contributing to the cultural, social, and economic vibrancy of our region.

We have received a number of accreditations for our Civic work, including being awarded a Bronze Engagement Watermark from the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE), joining UNESCO's Global Network of Learning Cities, becoming a 2* Fairtrade University and being a Responsible Futures accredited institution.
