Accommodation for apprentices

Apprentices in halls of residence

Whether you’re looking to do an apprenticeship in policing, engineering or social care, you can opt to live in Derby’s award-winning halls.  Many apprentices choose this option as it’s a great way to meet students from other programmes.

Most apprenticeships offer blended learning with on-the-job training making up 80% of learning, and the remaining 20% spent off the job at university.  For those with a 36-month degree apprenticeship, you can apply to live in halls during each year of study and there is also the option to apply to live with friends. Each year students who return to halls benefit from special returners financial incentives..

If you’re moving from outside the area, halls can be a great base to discover everything Derby has to offer. All our halls are just a short walking distance to the city centre and to the university buildings and there are several supermarkets nearby too.  Even if you live locally, halls can be a great way to broaden your horizons, meet new people and branch out for more independence.

Living in halls is affordable and has the added benefit of making it easy to meet new people. It allows you to make mates both inside the apprenticeship scheme and at the university. The free halls events are good fun and a great way to get to know other residents. As an apprentice living in halls I think I’ve got the best of both worlds.

The accommodation

All our hall accommodation is arranged in flats with four to six people sharing.  Each flat has its own fully equipped kitchen and depending on whether you choose an ensuite or standard room, there may be shared toilet and shower facilities. In most halls, communal areas in the flat are cleaned regularly and there is also a common room where you can play pool, PS4 and table tennis. You can also book out the room for your own event!

Prices start from as little as £119 a week (2026-27) for a single standard room.

With halls it’s all taken care of - no bills, no maintenance issues and a reliable landlord. The staff are friendly and supportive and there’s a 24hour contact number if you need it.
