Queen’s Nurse Honour for University’s lecturers

Two nursing lecturers from the University of Derby have become Queen’s Nurses.

Dr. Wendy Wesson, Head of Post-registration Health Care and Jill Gould, Lecturer in Post-registration Health Care, will receive their certificates at an awards ceremony on Monday, November 9, 2015.

The Queen’s Nurse rewards nurses, midwives and health visitors that are able to demonstrate a commitment to providing best care to their patients and life-long learning.

The title of Queen’s Nurse is available to practitioners who are registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and have a minimum of three years community nursing, primary care or health visiting experience.

The ceremony, held by the Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI), will take place at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington, London.

Wendy said: “I applied to become a Queen’s Nurse as I am committed to maintaining and improving standards of care in the community.

“I am delighted to receive the Queen’s Nurse title. Becoming a Queen’s Nurse will enable me to continue to positively influence community care, learning and leadership.”

Jill added: “I was encouraged to apply for the title of Queen’s Nurse by some of my former students and other Queen’s Nurses. I am an active member of the Association of District Nursing Educators and I have been fortunate enough to observe some of the excellent work that QNI has done to raise the profile of district nursing and campaign for better care closer to home.

“I was thrilled to receive this title and am motivated by the responsibility that goes with it - to have a positive influence on patient care and encourage more district nurses to apply in recognition of a challenging job done well.”

Bill Whitehead, Head of the Department for Health Care Practice at the University of Derby, said: “I was proud to hear that two of our post-registration nursing team had been successful in their applications for the Queen’s Nurse title. This is seen as an accolade for community nurses and both Wendy and Jill are very deserving of the Queen’s Nurse title.”
